Rick has been in involved in affordable housing for nearly thirty years. He was the architect for the Songaia Co-housing project in Bothell and the president of the La’mourita Coop in Seattle for nearly ten years. His practice regularly provides consultation to housing authorities, property management and potential developers of affordable housing projects.
During the past two years we have been responsible for construction oversight of more than $150M in affordable housing construction at twenty-six projects in seven Western states.
In addition to design services The Brown Associates/Architects is regularly involved in preparation and review of capital needs assessments for affordable housing projects in the eleven Western States for non-profits

Renovation of historic Co-op building in Seattle. Replacement of plumbing, electrical, roofing and exterior upgrades were completed.
Co-Housing project for twelve families. Five new duplexes with accessory dwelling unit capability. Two existing residences remodeled including community meeting hall and kitchen.
The Brown Associates/Architects is a full service architectural firm established in 1983 in the City of Seattle doing both commercial and residential work. While continuing to provide services seven western states, we located our offices to Whidbey Island in 1994. Our emphasis is on personal attention to the client’s program needs and budget. Our efforts are at your discretion and can be limited to as much or little help as you need. We can assist you through the jurisdictional maze, help you select contractors or provide permit drawings only.
Residential work includes custom homes as well as small remodels and additions. Multi-family efforts have included condominiums, apartments, co-housing and affordable housing projects with attention to energy and green solutions. Commercial work has included office and tenant improvement work of all kinds. We also have experience in designing church, television, hotel and restaurant and mixed-use buildings.
In addition to design work, we have over twenty years experience in construction observation in the seven western states, preparation of capital needs assessments and feasibility studies.
